Video Interaction Guidance
Video Interaction Guidance
Available to parents with infants or toddlers (0-2 years)
Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a strengths-based intervention designed to enhance communication within relationships by using video clips of everyday interactions. This process helps parents develop stronger, more attuned relationships with their infant or toddler.
Sensory Health Matters has supported families and parents with the following concerns or thoughts:
“I want to feel closer to my child”
“I want to feel less stressed as a parent”
“I don’t know how to settle me baby”
“Am I a good enough parent?”
“I want to have more fun with my child”
“I want to feel more confident as a parent.”
“I want to understand by child’s cues better.”
The VIG Process
The VIG practitioner begins by helping the family or parent to develop a 'helping question' linked to their goal; for example: What am I doing to build a closer relationship with my child?' or ‘what do I do to help soothe my baby?”
The VIG practitioner takes a video of a few minutes of interaction
The VIG practitioner microanalyses the video: editing it to create 'clips' of connected moments. These videos often capture moments that are better than usual, showcasing parent’s natural strengths.
The VIG practitioner and the parent view, and explore, the clips together in the ‘shared review’
The VIG practitioner receives the parent’s ideas (initiatives)
Together they notice and build on the parent’s strengths and co-create new ideas.
Together, we typically repeat this process three or four times over a period of three to five months.
VIG recognises that change is possible, even in challenging situations and recognised that parents are doing the best they can at any given time.

What our families say about Video Interaction Guidance:
“After a challenging postpartum year, I was really struggling with my confidence as a new mum. Angela was brilliant in affirming how strong my relationship with my little boy was, highlighting beautiful moments that made me believe in myself again and made me fall even more in love with him.
- Mother of an 11-month old
“I’m noticing moments that I wouldn’t have noticed before. I would have disregarded them on days she says she hates me. Whereas now, even on a bad day, there have actually been more positive moments.”
- Adoptive parent

Infant/Toddler Sensory Profiling Assessment:
Utilizing the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM-2), we will evaluate how your young child responds to sensory experiences in their daily environments. This assessment identifies sensory processing strengths and challenges by observing and measuring reactions to different sensory stimuli, such as touch, sound, and movement. It helps parents to understand the infant or toddlers sensory needs, further guiding our recommendations to support optimal sensory development and enhance overall well-being.
